PGA Catalunya
Architect: N. Coles & A. Gallardo. 36 holes: 6588m: par 72
A spectacular and challenging course designed with European Tour
events in mind. From the elevated clubhouse the course descends through
dense pines where the extensive water features come into play. The course
has five tees at each hole allowing players of any standard handicap
to enjoy the golf.
The surrounding landscape of the Montseny Mountains and the Pyrenees
make it a challenging course to play on, the fairways are wide and rolling
but there are the obstacles of two large lakes, sloping terrain, and
sand traps. The club is located in the village of Caldes de Marvella
close to Girona, the airport is only a ten minute drive. (back to map)
Empordá
Architect: R. Von Hagge. 36 holes: 6160m: par 71 + 3020m: par 35
The Empordà Golf course now offers a total of 36 holes, divided into two separate 18-hole courses: Links and Forest. The course was designed to integrate a links-style course in a style reminiscent of the world-famous greens of Scotland with two large lakes, dunes and rolling bunkers in a classic Mediterranean landscape complete with dense, manicured pine stands and spacious fairways. Robert von Hagge has managed to improve an already stellar setting by creating a technically perfect course that allows for a wide variety of swings and techniques. Both courses take full advantage of the natural beauty of the setting, the stunning El Baix Empordà in the heart of the Costa Brava region.(back to map)
Platja de Pals
Architect: F. Hawtree. 18 holes: 6222m: par 73
The oldest club in the area. The course was founded in 1966, at that
time with only 9 holes. In 1970, coinciding with the Spanish International
Amateur Championship, the complete 18 hole course was opened. A level
stretch of coastal pine forest was transformed by Fred Hawtree into
a delightful golfing challenge for all levels of player. Thick canopies
of parasol pines line every fairway and the greens are well defended
with sand. Its excellent fairways, with clean roughs and deep bunkers
will take you to perfectly cared for and mainly smooth greens.
You can get to Pals Golf Club in half an hour from Girona. (back to map)
Costa Brava
Architect: H. Strutt & Co. 18 holes: 5573m: par 70
Founded in 1968, the course combines a very technical first 9 holes,
surrounded by pines and cork oaks, with the long second 9 holes, of
flat terrain with wide long fairways. The first four holes are a little
quirky and take some getting to know, after that the course unwinds
gently amongst pines and oaks. The 18th hole lies close to the Club
House, a Catalunyan farm built in 1841, and from the Club House Restaurant
you have a beautiful view of the 18th green, down below. Not too long
and not too tight: a day here will be enjoyed by all. Easy to reach
only half an hour from Girona. (back to map)
Girona
Architect: F. Hawtree. 18 holes: 6100m: par 72
The prestigious architect, FG Hawtree, designed the course and he
himself describes it as 'one of my finest creations'. The quality of
the design is matched by the care taken in its maintenance, being the
only course in Spain that has been seeded with 'Penncross' grass. Situated
just North of Girona, the course takes full advantage of the topography
and the natural shaping of the terrain, with the result that the course
is elegant and pleasing and at the same time challenging for the golfers
of all levels. It is however, a hilly course so a buggy is worth considering.
Golfers enjoy Pyrenean panoramas from the clubhouse and many parts of
the course. (back to map)
Club de Golf d'Aro
Architect: D Ramon Espinosa. 18 holes: 6218m : par 72
Situated in the 'Les Gavarres mountains, this course was constructed
by literally slicing off the top of a mountain! Set at 300m above sea
level, with spectacular panoramic views of the famous Costa Brava, the
varied and fairly difficult round of 18 championship holes features
a variety of water hazards, tough bunker placements and undulating greens.
The course runs through gently rolling hills of pine, corks oaks and
more than a thousand olive trees. Two artificial lakes complete the
unique course charm. Some of the climbs can be very wearing so you might
consider using a buggy here. This is a good test of your patience and
ability to use every club in the bag. (back to map)
Serres de Pals
Architect: D Ramon Espinosa. 18 holes: 6800m : par 72
This newly built championship course opened in October 2000. It is
located between the picturesque villages of Pals and Torroella and has
the spectacular views overlooking the paradise islands of Medes. As
it is only 2km from the Mediterranean coast, you have views of the ocean
while you play.
The course, made of three very different landscapes areas, is a very
interesting and challenging course to play on. There is one area of
smooth hilltops, the other consists of pine forests and then you will
have to watch out for the fairways between the beautiful lakes, which
work as convenient hazards.
The course is rather unique for a club in Spain, American in design
it is rather flat and challenging, making it very similar to courses
located in Florida. (back to map)
